The theme of this year’s Southeast Educational Data Symposium is “Closing the Loop.” By considering data, intervention, and evaluation together as part of a common conversation with the goal of enhancing student success, we can make analytics more actionable for educators and more beneficial for students.
Analytics are indispensable to student success and are used in many ways in higher education. Colleges and universities collect data to reveal trends and build predictive models. An increase in the availability of Educational data has made it possible to better identify at-risk behaviors, create opportunities to develop timely interventions that enhance learning outcomes and graduation rates, and continually evaluate intervention programs in order to optimize their impact.
Real progress is being made, but all too often, progress is being made in isolation within the domains of analytics, intervention, and evaluation. Enormous opportunities lie in viewing these domains as partners in a continuous interplay of educational improvement and innovation. The presentations and workshops of this symposium are designed to reveal these real, actionable opportunities.
In line with the values of the Southeast Educational Data Society, SEEDS16 will bring together a wide variety of perspectives to address specific problems and with a view toward action. Symposium participants will be invited to engage with speakers presenting on innovative work being done using educational data to promote student success. Charles Dziuban, Director of the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness at the University of Central Florida (UCF), will deliver the keynote address for the event. Chuck is an engaging speaker with a proven ability to use data in a way that effectively connects institutional concerns with faculty development and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Although regional in emphasis, the Southeast Educational Data Symposium will be global in reach. In partnership with the Society of Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR), SEEDS16 will join groups of experts and practitioners in an intentional conversation as a LASI-local (Learning Analytics Summer Institutes).
